GRIT 9U Defeats Stars to Capture Memorial Day Championship
Over Memorial Day weekend, Fauquier-based GRIT Baseball captured the Kyle’s Kamp Memorial Day Tournament Championship after defeating Fairfax Stars Lee 9U 13-1 in the title game, continuing what has quickly become a standout season for the young organization.
The tournament, hosted by the Northern Virginia Travel Baseball League, Kyle’s Kamp is designed to raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer patients through Children’s National Medical Center, allowing young athletes to compete while supporting children and families facing unimaginable challenges.
GRIT powered through the rainy tournament with decisive wins over the Alexandria Reds 29-10, Mount Vernon Mavericks 19-1, and Fairfax Stars Lee 13-1 to secure the championship.
But for those around the program, the wins are only part of the story.
What continues to separate GRIT is the environment being built around these boys. Coaches, parents, and players alike have embraced a culture centered on accountability, effort, teamwork, and growth. The expectation is to compete hard, support one another, and represent the organization the right way on and off the field.
In a youth sports landscape that often focuses solely on outcomes, GRIT is founded on standards that focus on effort, attitude, managing emotions, respecting the game, and building confident, driven, and inspired athletes.
The result has been a team that not only competes at a high level but also plays with confidence, toughness, and togetherness well beyond their age.
Families connected to the organization say the chemistry within the group has become one of the most rewarding parts of the season.
The biggest thing for us has never been just winning baseball games,” said Head Coach Chris. “We’ve been very intentional about developing complete players and putting the boys in situations that help them grow long term. Every kid on our team can pitch, and that’s by design. We want them to learn multiple skillsets, handle adversity, support each other, and gain confidence in every part of the game. If we can build strong character, a love for the game, and keep baseball fun while developing them the right way, then we’re doing what we set out to do, and the results speak for themselves.”
The championship weekend reflected that collective effort.
Throughout the tournament, contributions came from across the roster, with strong pitching, aggressive baserunning, disciplined at-bats, and unselfish team play helping GRIT power through the field. The team showed depth, composure, and resilience while competing against organizations from across Northern Virginia.
For a program that launched just two years ago, GRIT Baseball is already gaining rapid traction throughout the region. What began as one team with a vision to build something different has quickly expanded into a growing organization that now includes a 16U team and the recent launch of a new collegiate, coach-led rising 9U team.
The program’s continued growth reflects the demand for a development-focused culture that balances competitive baseball with mentorship, accountability, character development, and community.
With a championship trophy heading back to Fauquier County and a victory over Fairfax Stars to close the weekend, GRIT continues to prove that the program is building something far bigger than baseball.
